James H. Clinton, Sr. was on his way to work on the morning of the Eastland Disaster when he heard the screams and noise. He came upon the scene early and spent all day recovering victims from the river.

James (shown in his backyard at 1130 North Pulaski) spent 25 years of service with the Chicago Police Department. His star number was 116. Of his 25 years with the CPD he spent 17 years in the Loop where he served in the traffic division (11years at Randolph and Wabash as well as six years at State and South Water). His final eight years he served at the Maxwell Street Station in the market district. He retired with a perfect record and a commendation from the Chief.
