Caroline Schroth Affeld boarded the Eastland with her unmarried sister, Dora Schroth (who worked at Western Electric). Both women perished.
Caroline's husband Max had worked irregularly, and after the death of his wife and sister-in-law, he broke his arm and became quite helpless and irresponsible. A married sister who lived out of state came to take charge of his care.
The Western Electric Company benefit of $193 was paid to Caroline and Dora's father Henry, and the Eastland Fund gift of $230 was paid to Caroline's husband Max.
Caroline's married sister, Anna Schroth Klier, could not go to the picnic with her sisters because her husband told her that she had to cook lunch for their farm's thrashers (oat season). As a result, she was spared.
