George Butenshen was a Chicago policeman on duty as a traffic cop when the Eastland Disaster occurred. Not only was he one of the first responders on the scene, he repeatedly dove into the Chicago River and rescued many passengers who were struggling to survive.

George married a few weeks after the tragedy.
