Paul and Laura Krones boarded the Eastland, leaving their five children at home. They both survived.

Paul dragged his wife to safety, but it was a struggle. While lying on his stomach on the wet hull of the Eastland, her tight skirt made it impossible for her to swing her foot up to a place of safety. "Some blessed man gave my foot a boost or Paul could not have pulled me out," Laura said.
