Hazel Myers was invited to the Western Electric excursion and picnic by her aunt, Bertha Wintermute, who worked at Western Electric. Hazel invited her betrothed, James Hays, to accompany her and her aunt on the Eastland for a day of merriment.

They boarded the Eastland and were some of the lucky ones to escape with their lives.
