James H. Payne, Jr. worked as a boxmaker. He lived at home with his parents and four other siblings. James was going to attend the excursion/picnic with six other boys, and of this group of seven, only James perished.

His parents initially declined to accept any financial assistance, but later agreed to accept the $200 awarded to them by the Red Cross.
