...the two brothers planned to attend the outing together...
Joseph Peternell came from Austria to the United States in 1903. In 1910 he was living in the Hawthorne area of Cicero with his widowed sister, Mary, her children, his mother, Maria, and his younger brother, Edward. Both Joseph and his brother Edward worked at the Western Electric Company, and the two brothers had planned to attend the Hawthorne Works employee excursion and picnic together. Edward, who was dating Susan Jordan at the time, changed his plans at the last minute and went out on a date with Susan instead. Joseph went downtown to attend the picnic, and never returned home.
