Young Elizabeth Rackow and her grandmother, Augusta Wiese, boarded the Eastland together on their way to the Western Electric employee picnic and excursion.

Elizabeth's aunt Minnie, her uncle Daniel Quinn, and her cousin Lauretta were to have joined them for the picnic as well. But Daniel and his wife Minnie got into an argument and ended up returning home instead.

Grandmother Augusta and granddaughter Elizabeth both perished that morning.
