OTHER NOTES:

...gave his life in the effort to save others...

Catherine "Kate" Sheridan was 21 years old and single. She was a native of Legnagrow, County Cavan, Ireland. An employee at the Hawthorne Works, she sent her earnings to her parents still living in her homeland of Ireland.

One of Kate's friends was Mary Ellen McGovern. On the photo of Mary Ellen (left) and Kate the words "Maggie & Jigs" were written. Maggie & Jigs was an apparent reference to a popular comic strip during that time, and was written on the photo by Mary Ellen, evidently as a reference to their friendship.

The two young women had plans to attend the picnic. Mary Ellen was late arriving to board the Eastland, while her friend Kate did board and lost her life.
