Josefa Zimma was one of five daughters living at home with her widowed mother of nine years. She and one other sister provided the means of support for their household. Josefa's sister, Hattie, and Hattie's husband John also perished aboard the Eastland: Their nearly two-year-old daughter Eleanor joined the household to be cared for by her extended family.
