Chicago, Illinois -- For the 19th consecutive summer, the Eastland Disaster Historical Society will host the anniversary commemoration for Chicago's greatest loss-of-life tragedy on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. We hope you will join us at the Chicago Riverwalk for this year’s commemoration ceremony, and then follow with us over to Barbara's Bookstore to attend Patricia Sutton's book signing event. Whether you have joined us in previous years or are considering attending for your first time, all are welcome to participate.
The ceremony starts at 1:00 p.m. on the Chicago Riverwalk (on the west side of the Clark Street bridge), and lasts until 1:30 p.m. Our program's guests will include a representative from the
Chicago Maritime Museum as well as author
Patricia Sutton. From 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Patricia Sutton will read excerpts from her new book
Capsized!: The Forgotten Story of the SS Eastland Disaster, answer questions, and sign copies at
Barbara’s Bookstore.
Capsized!: The Forgotten Story of the SS Eastland Disaster is the fifth book written on the Eastland Disaster and is the first one written for a younger audience—grade school and up. Both events are free to the public!
The ceremony and book signing are great opportunities to connect with other individuals and families whose family legacies all intersected on July 24, 1915. Please review our
schedule for the weekend, and we hope you will join us on July 22nd and be part of the growing public audience that remembers the tens of thousands of people who were involved in the Eastland Disaster while commemorating the history of the tragedy.
