Hattie Freilich's daughter was born in Chicago and baptized as Eleanor Catherine. She was six days shy of being two years old and immediately orphaned when her mother Hattie and her father John perished in the Eastland Disaster. Hattie's younger sister Josefa also perished that fateful day. Eleanor was raised by Hattie's widowed mother's household.
